Geodroid Beta initial release
The first beta for Geodroid has been released this afternoon. It should appear in the Android Marketplace soon. Geodroid is a general GPS application for marking and locating waypoints. The motivation came from the lack of a decent geocaching application for the G1. While the G1 isn’t the most powerful GPS device in the market, it will allow for some spontaneous or light geocaching.
Outside of it’s geocaching influence, Geodroid is great for marking any location and finding your way back. There are more planned features than I could hope to list here. Looking forward to user feedback. There will be a more formal review posted later on, but for now there is one thing you should know: the compass.
The G1’s electronic compass flips out around running cars, non-running cars, big pieces of metal, and other electronics. Don’t believe me? Install Geodroid, start your car, open the Geodroid compass, now watch the compass and while safely in park, rev the engine a few times. The compass will go crazy. You’ve been warned. Ideal conditions for the compass are nude in a grassy field with only your G1, though some non-metallic clothing shouldn’t hurt and in the end you’ll still have friends.
Hey there,
love the concept behind the Gedroid app.
I do a lot of sailing so this would mean i can plug in the lat long of the buoys and then use the compass to navigate to them.
couple of questions though, everytime i try and plug in a lat long i get a message stating – lonitude or latitude is out of range?
What does this mean….
Would also love a screen that shows the map, with the compass on the same screen. that would be really cool.
thanks and keep up the good work
Great start on this app! I was very excited to see something finally show up for geocaching. The only thing I can see that would be great is a way to get a bunch of waypoints in at once, maybe from a .loc file or something that I can get off the geocaching.com website. I’m really new to geocaching and only got started because I got a G1, so there may be another way to do this that I’m not aware of. Anyway, I’m excited to have this great little app. Thanks for your great work!!
Beyond geocaching, I see this app as a useful way to store emergency locations (such as trailheads) for hikers. For this to be practical, however, it is best if these locations can be stored in a file and loaded into Geodroid (as suggested by Jeff). That way we can use powerful tools (e.g., Google Earth) to locate the points. Also, with a file of locations we can share them with other people who will be going to the same area. Keep up the good work! This is a winner app.
Love your application! I agree being able to import cache data would be a wonderful addition (somehow using the G1’s GPS to feed current location into Geocache.com, display nearby caches, let me select ones of interest, then download coordinates & cache names directly to the G1 to import into Geodroid) Thanks for making this available!
Just entered a few waypoints and I love it already, exactly what I was looking for on the G1, keep up the excellent work!!
Great App! Just right for me when I need to set a waypoint. Would ove to see creation date and time for each waypoint.
Thanks for creating the app.
