Geodroid Beta initial release
The first beta for Geodroid has been released this afternoon. It should appear in the Android Marketplace soon. Geodroid is a general GPS application for marking and locating waypoints. The motivation came from the lack of a decent geocaching application for the G1. While the G1 isn’t the most powerful GPS device in the market, it will allow for some spontaneous or light geocaching.
Outside of it’s geocaching influence, Geodroid is great for marking any location and finding your way back. There are more planned features than I could hope to list here. Looking forward to user feedback. There will be a more formal review posted later on, but for now there is one thing you should know: the compass.
The G1’s electronic compass flips out around running cars, non-running cars, big pieces of metal, and other electronics. Don’t believe me? Install Geodroid, start your car, open the Geodroid compass, now watch the compass and while safely in park, rev the engine a few times. The compass will go crazy. You’ve been warned. Ideal conditions for the compass are nude in a grassy field with only your G1, though some non-metallic clothing shouldn’t hurt and in the end you’ll still have friends.
